On FreeBSD the whitespace around the ``=`` triggers a (cryptic) ``no such file or directory`` error. removing the whitespace like above fixes this.

- the issue was introduced by the commit 84759faa

Add a lot of tests to verify parsing routines for scenarios that should pass.  Some changes TBD, like stripping command spaces off end of expressions.
